Urban Klima 2050 shares its experience in climate adaptation at a municipal level at the national meeting of the Covenant of Mayors

Representatives of partner organisations: Ihobe, Tecnalia and URA have presented different aspects of the work being carried out in the Basque Country to address the impact of climate change.

Representatives of the partner organisations of the LIFE IP Urban Klima 2050 project: IhobeTecnalia and the Basque Water Board-URA participated in the National Meeting of the Covenant of Mayors, held in Tarragona from 2nd to 4th April, organised by Tarragona Provincial Council. 

The annual event, organised by the Covenant of Mayors Europe Office brought together local representatives from all over Spain to share experiences and pool the work carried out so far by local authorities in mitigation and adaptation to climate change.

Different aspects of the work being carried out in the Basque Country to address the impact of climate change were presented at the meeting, which was attended by Mari Mar Alonso Martín, Director of Climate Action at Ihobe, Beñat Abajo, researcher at Tecnalia, and José María Sanz de Galdeano Equiza, Director of Planning and Works at URA. During his presentation, the Tecnalia representative spoke about the work being carried out within the framework of Urban Klima 2050 Action C.8.3 Generation of tools and training for local councils, through which the assessment of the vulnerability and risk of Basque municipalities to climate changeis being extended. He also presented the case of the municipality of Bilbao as an example of urban adaptation to overheating, one of the main threats identified for the future of the city.

The URA representative focused on the management of floods, one of the most significant risks for the Basque Country, highlighting the actions being carried out to reduce the territory's vulnerability to this phenomenon.
