The EITB programme devotes its latest episode to the urban recovery actions implemented in Punta Zorrotza (Bilbao) and to the project to mitigate the risk of flooding in Bakio.

The EITB programme, Teknopolis has devoted its latest episode, 'Frente a la emergencia climática’ (Facing the climate emergency), to the climate change mitigation and adaptation actions being carried out in the Basque Country. Two LIFE IP Urban Klima 2050 pilot projects are among the initiatives highlighted in the programme:

Punta Zorrotza (Bilbao): actions planned by Bilbao City Council with the assistance of Tecnalia to recover this space with an industrial past are detailed. The aim of the study is to assess and address climate risks in this urban area, and to develop an urban development project designed to sustainably restore this space with a mixed-use, both housing and economic activity.

Bakio: In addition, the programme visits Bakio in Bizkaia, where the Town Hall and URA - Basque Water Agency, are working on a project to mitigate the risk of flooding in this coastal site. To do so, natural solutions have been taken into account in order to return the natural space to the ecosystem with the recovery of an inland marsh and a floodable forest in the case of the River Estepona. Both initiatives are part of the 40 actions that make up Urban Klima 2050, the largest climate action project in the Basque Country, co-financed by the European Union's LIFE programme.
