Transformation, Regeneration and Naturalisation of the Urban and Industrial Environment
Online
In person: Miramar Jauregia - Donostia
The urban model that has dominated since industrial development has resulted in the creation of cities with an excessive artificialisation of land and reduced public space, largely devoted to road traffic. This way of understanding city development has led to countless asymmetries and multidimensional regeneration issues.
Urban districts designed with environmental, urban planning and zoning parameters that have now been superseded, are now engaged in comprehensive urban regeneration processes with new management and (re)planning criteria. Moreover, industrial spaces designed for a specific economic function have become obsolete and have structural deficiencies that need to be reassessed and tackled with new transitional approaches.
New paradigms of urban sustainability have an impact on this new approach to urban issues, with feasible responses to new social demands, to much more demanding environmental parameters, to essential energy transformation processes and to new models of economic and business activity for our cities.
This second Summer Course aims to delve deeper into these new paradigms of urban sustainability as a transformative and efficient tool for tackling urban decay, climate change, the energy crisis and the socio-economic challenges we are facing.
It combines theoretical sessions on the new concepts that are beginning to permeate urban planning and design with real examples of urban transformations that have applied or still apply these criteria as a way of reconceptualising urban environments and meeting different social, environmental and economic demands.
Objectives
- To learn about the new paradigms of sustainable urban planning.
- To provide practical examples of the implementation of urban regeneration tools and strategies.
- To raise awareness of urban naturalisation and highlight its benefits.
