The International NetworkNature event presents Urban Klima 2050
30/09/2024
The Urban Klima 2050 study has been presented at the annual event held in Brussels on 25th September in the session devoted to scientific posters.
The international NetworkNature event has highlighted the actions of the LIFE IP Urban Klima 2050 project which applies nature-based solutions as a "remarkable case" and has included it in the session devoted to poster presentations.
This year’s annual event, which was held on Wednesday 25 September in Brussels and could also be followed on-line, included a space for the presentation of a poster devoted to the Urban Klima 2050 actions. The poster details the objectives of the project which, as it explains, "aims to advance climate governance at all administrative levels and promote the integration of climate change into various sectoral policies, such as health, water management and energy, among others". It also highlights that it "focuses on demonstration and action, as well as on a participatory process and stakeholder involvement".
Environmental impact through nature-based solutions
The presentation also looks at the environmental impact of the actions that Urban Klima 2050 is developing in the Basque Country and explains that "the project promotes regional adaptation to climate through innovative solutions, particularly nature-based ones". To demonstrate this claim, data is included, such as "by 2030, the pilot areas are expected to experience significant improvements, such as a 30% reduction in the depth of flooded areas, a 2-5% fall in air temperature and a 10-20% decrease in average radiant temperature". Furthermore, it highlights that "the benefits include the reduction of 6,450 tonnes of CO2 emissions and the improvement of air quality".
On the other hand, it also takes into account the commitment to the generation of renewable energy, the restoration of coastal areas and degraded land, the extension of riverside forests, or the replacement of non-native forests with native species in order to boost biodiversity.
NetworkNature 2024
This year’s NetworkNature annual event focuses on 'Busting the Myths' in relation to ecosystem management. The conference will revolve around myths that practice, research, policy making, and NBS businesses are busting or that need to be busted to guarantee transformative change and reverse biodiversity loss.
