Phase V of the Mendebaldea Project, creating a linear park to the south of the Jundiz industrial estate, gets underway

26/09/2023

The "Mendebaldea Project” seeks the environmental and landscape restoration of the area around the Jundiz industrial estate, creating a new park as an extension of the Green Belt. In this way, it aims to boost the ecological connectivity between the Vitoria Mountains and the River Zadorra, and on the other hand, increase the sustainability of the region in order to improve air quality and reduce greenhouse gases.

The project began in Lermanda, progressing towards the south and east of the A-1 motorway. To date, 4 phases have already been implemented.

Phase V will connect the Jundiz Services Centre, which includes sports facilities, hotels, accommodation and schools, with the Ibaia camp-site and sports city, by means of a pedestrian and cycle path, linking the park with the Zabalgana neighbourhood and ultimately with the city of Vitoria-Gasteiz.

In addition to the paths, a series of reforestations will be carried out to create forest-based carbon sinks that will contribute to climate change mitigation, rounding off this green corridor. The work is scheduled for the end of 2023 and early 2024, and will improve the landscape of around 5 hectares of public green space located between the N-12 road and the south of the industrial estate.

The actions will include general cleaning of the area and selective separation of any waste, construction of the paths using recycled materials, installation of two wooden footbridges to cross the streams, the use of organic compost and the establishment of high-density sowing and forest plantations forming different types of forest (holm oak, gall oak, riverside and scrub).

Funding

The project has a budget of €178 053.51, including VAT. The Basque Government will co-finance up to 50 % of the expenditure excluding VAT, through grants from the Regional Ministry of the Environment, Territorial Planning and Housing for local councils carrying out actions to foster sustainable development. It is also financed by the European Urban Klima 2050 project.
