KLIMA AZOKA has proven to be an effective tool to make citizens aware of the importance of adopting more sustainable habits in their daily life.

The participants scored their general satisfaction an average of 4.7 out of 5, while the impact on environmental awareness was 4.6.

The initiative was driven by Ihobe, the Basque Energy Board-EVE and the LIFE IP Urban Klima 2050 project with the support of the Ekoetxea Network.

The travelling fair to foster climate action through interactive and recreational experiences, KLIMA AZOKA, was taken through the Basque Country between March and December 2024; it was visited by over 5,000 participants while the fair was at different events and municipalities. This initiative, organised by Ihobe, the Basque Energy Board-EVE and the LIFE IP Urban Klima 2050 project, with the support of the Ekoetxea Network, has proven to be an effective tool to make citizens aware of the importance of adopting more sustainable habits in their everyday life.

During 2024, KLIMA AZOKA was present at events such as the Berdeago fair, held in Durango; Ibilaldia, in Getxo; Bioterra, in Irun; Bizkaia Gara, in Plentzia, BEOWBurdin Jaia, in Gallarta; Kilometroak, in Azpeitia; and Makusi. For the second year running, the KLIMA AZOKA marquees were also at ASTEKLIMA, the Basque Climate and Energy Week, in Bilbao, Gernika, Eibar, Amurrio, Vitoria-Gasteiz, Sestao, Zumarraga/Urretxu and Hernani.

The fair takes visitors on a journey through different thematic marquees addressing aspects such as climate change, habits at home, mobility, leisure and consumption, climate change adaptation through LIFE IP Urban Klima 2050, and soil protection. Each participant had the opportunity to use interactive games and dynamics to reflect on their environmental impact and make an individual commitment to sustainability.

A citizen empowerment initiative

KLIMA AZOKA emerged from the pilot scheme of one of the actions of the Basque Citizen Empowerment for Climate Action Plan, specifically within the Urban Klima 2050 ‘With citizens to climate action’ initiative; tools are thus being developed and actions rolled out to jointly engage and train citizens in climate change.

This initiative began in 2023 as part of ASTEKLIMA, the Basque Climate and Energy Week, obtaining a positive response with over 1,700 participants in its first edition. The experience accumulated at that event was the basis to improve the proposal and extend its scope throughout 2024, and with the aim of its continuing on its journey in 2025.

High satisfaction and better awareness

The excellent public response is reflected in the KLIMA AZOKA assessment data. The participants scored their general satisfaction an average of 4.7 out of 5, while the impact on environmental awareness was 4.66 out of 5. These results confirm that the proposal managed to generate a positive reflection on climate action and the need to adopt more sustainable habits.
