23/01/2025

Coinciding with the World Environmental Education Day on 26th January, the Ekoetxea Network has presented its balance of activity for 2024.
2024 was a record year for the Basque Ekoetxea Network’s environmental centres, as more than 140,000 people visited one of its four centres. Of these, 28,000 were students from schools all over the Basque Country who took part in one of the many educational activities offered by the Ekoetxea Network to help children from the three territories to understand their natural environment better and to integrate environmental friendliness into their values.
The Network, as an environmental education platform, offered 278 organised experiences with a high level of user satisfaction (9.3 points out of 10). Activities that can be highlighted include World Environment Day (5th June), focusing on soil restoration, drought resilience and the fight against desertification; European Week for Waste Reduction (16th-24th November), which aimed to reduce food waste; World Soil Day (5th December), in which nearly a thousand schoolchildren took part in an interactive challenge that combined fun with curricular learning; and the Trukegune Christmas Campaign (5th December), carried out in collaboration with Koopera and Elkargunea, to encourage responsible consumption and create sustainable habits through the exchange of objects.
About the Ekoetxea Network
The intense environmental education activity carried out by the Ekoetxea Network of centres positions it as a benchmark for the promotion of sustainable habits and raising awareness of climate change.
In 2025, the Ekoetxea Network will maintain its commitment to environmental education as an essential tool to move towards a more sustainable future. Thanks to networking and the implementation of innovative methodologies such as Growth, it has managed to optimise its resources and strengthened its educational offer.
The Basque Ekoetxea Network of environmental centres is made up of four strategically located spaces in the Basque Country: Urdaibai and Meatzaldea, in Bizkaia; and Txingudi and Azpeitia, in Gipuzkoa. Each centre offers activities adapted to its environment, such as exhibitions, workshops, guided tours and educational programmes.
