Ihobe has launched an Nature-Based Solutions interactive viewer related to climate adaptation measures implemented in the Basque Country
27/05/2025
This tool, available on the Ihobe website, offers technical staff, municipal authorities and citizens a comprehensive vision of how these solutions are transforming the Basque territory to adapt to climate change.
The viewer enables projects to be filtered by type of solution (green roofs, sustainable drainage, reforestation, phyto-purification, etc.), scale of intervention (buildings, public spaces, rural areas, infrastructures, coastline, etc.), climatic threat and historical territory. Each action includes a detailed fact sheet with technical information, objectives, environmental, social and economic co-benefits, as well as lessons learned and the actors involved.
With the 31 interventions compiled to date, from almost 100 that Ihobe has identified, this platform not only makes the Basque Country's commitment to climate adaptation visible, but also acts as a source of inspiration and a practical guide to replicate these solutions in other municipalities. Furthermore, the different actors can request the inclusion of new NBS projects that have been executed and they will be published in the viewer, once they have been reviewed and validated technically by Ihobe.
The natural solutions included in the viewer have been implemented in 23 Basque municipalities, involving almost 900 hectares and having planted more than 300,000 trees. All in all, the total investment in these projects amounts to more than €40 million.
Success stories now available
- Buildings, such as green roofs, natural façades, dry toilets, phyto-purification systems and rainwater harvesting.
- Private outdoor spaces, such as the renaturalisation of school playgrounds in Orduña and Vitoria-Gasteiz.
- Public spaces, including urban regeneration in Aduna and Sestao, sustainable drainage in Donostia and Legazpi or permeable car parks in Muxika.
- Industrial zones: Restoration of the ruins of Urtubiaga (Ea) and green corridor in Jundiz (Vitoria-Gasteiz).
- Transport infrastructures, with projects such as the renaturalisation of the Oiartzun River (Errenteria) and the conversion of urban arteries into green corridors (Bilbao).
- Water bodies: Txomin-Enea River Park (Donostia).
- Rural and natural environment: Phyto-purification systems in Errigoiti and Ibarrangelu, reforestation in Bakio, Donostia and Orendain.
- Coastline: Environmental recovery of the Tonpoi cliffs (Bermeo).
These actions, and many others available in the new Ihobe viewer, demonstrate the versatility and positive impact of NBS on climate change adaptation, biodiversity enhancement and the quality of urban and rural life.
