Clearing and controlling invasive species on Mount Oberan
11/09/2024
After the afforestation work with native species carried out in 2021 and 2022, this summer the Donostia/San Sebastián City Council has removed specimens of invasive species identified in the area.
Mainly, specimens of pokeweed (Phytolacca americana) and, to a lesser extent, buddleia (Buddleja davidii) and pampas grass (Cortaderia selloana) have been uprooted. The work has been carried out taking special care not to damage the trees planted during afforestation (mostly oak, alder, birch and ash).
Young specimens of the felled exotic species that have regrown in the area, namely Lawson cypress in the upper part of the area and American oak in the lower part of the area, have also been removed.
Finally, shoots on the American oak stumps have been cleared.
The land on which the work has been carried out belongs exclusively to the Donostia/San Sebastián City Council and is part of the Aiako Harria Natural Park (ES20120016) and the Natura 2000 Network.
This initiative is part of Action C4.2:Key green infrastructure for improving urban-rural connection and the resilience of the territory.
