Bilbao will start work in September on renaturalising Txinbo Park and improving its flood resilience

The project is led by Bilbao City Council as part of the LIFE IP Urban Klima 2050 programme and will improve the integration of the park with the River Cadagua using nature-based solutions and help reduce the risk of flooding in the surrounding area.
Bilbao City Council, has awarded the contract for the work to restore and renaturalise Txinbo Park, in Punta Zorrotza. The project is due to begin this coming September and will be carried out as part of the LIFE IP Urban Klima 2050 project. The project will improve the integration of this green space with the River Cadagua and enhance the area’s climate resilience in the face of the risk of flooding.
The project involves refurbishing a strip of land alongside the riverbed by creating tiered wooden platforms and new recreational areas to encourage the public to engage more closely with the riverside environment. It also includes restoring the ecosystem along the riverbank by introducing native vegetation and improving the area’s ecological connectivity.
Moreover, the project has a significant component focused on adapting to climate change. The new design will increase the park’s capacity to absorb and manage flood events, facilitating natural water retention and helping reduce the risk of flooding in an area that is particularly vulnerable to such events.
This initiative is part of action C.4.1 Nature-based solutions and their co-benefits, which promotes the implementation of nature-based solutions to improve the adaptation of urban environments to the effects of climate change and create additional environmental and social benefits.
