Bakio works on flood protection and the environmental improvement of the River Estepona
30/11/2023
Urban Klima 2050 shows a video of the project that will increase the resilience of the River Estepona to the threats of climate change, recover degraded natural space and develop recreational areas.
Bakio is one of seven Basque municipalities where the LIFE IP Urban Klima 2050 is carrying out pilot projects on mitigating and adapting to climate change. Each of these projects has been documented in a collection of videos which the Basque Country's largest climate action project is publishing in stages to coincide with the UN Climate Change Conference (COP 28) to be held in Dubai between November 30 and December 12, 2023.
In the case of Bakio, the technical video explains in detail the actions planned for flood protection and the environmental improvement of the River Estepona. The project, led by Bakio Town Council and the Basque Water Agency - URA is being run by a multidisciplinary team and is designed to achieve several objectives. On the one hand, it is aimed at increasing the resilience of the River Estepona to the threats of climate change, gaining space for the river and thereby reducing the risk of flooding in the area. On the other, the different actions planned will make it possible to recover a degraded natural space in order to develop the river and riverside ecosystem. A space for recreational uses will also be created by developing different leisure areas.
