Bakio and the UPV to study the effects of climate change on the municipality’s water resources

The council of this town in Vizcaya has signed an agreement with the Basque university to continue studying its water resources.

Bakio Town Council and the University of the Basque Country (UPV-EHU) have signed a collaboration agreement to study the possible impact of climate change on the municipality’s water resources. The agreement also aims to analyse climate effects on environmental conservation.

The new agreement with the Hydrogeology Department will study the capacity of a groundwater pool discovered after a first study three years ago. This preliminary study was managed by Ihobe with a €70,000 grant, which was used to purchase specific equipment such as piezometers that will be used to continue the research work.

The study will identify the risks of the effects of climate change and the actions required so that the municipality can better adapt to global warming. These actions include the creation of a floodable forest to mitigate the flooding of the River Estepona which flows through the town. This is planned within the framework of the LIFE IP Urban Klima 2050 project led by Bakio Town Council and the Basque Water Agency URA.
