ASTEKLIMA 2025 kicks off with nearly 200 activities to boost climate and energy action in the Basque Country

17/10/2025

The Basque Country is getting ready to enjoy a new edition of ASTEKLIMA, the Climate and Energy Week, which will take place on 17-26 October offering nearly 200 free activities open to the public in the three historical territories. The aim is to bring climate action closer to citizens and accelerate the energy transition from the local level.

Promoted by the Basque Government’s Department of Industry, Energy Transition and Sustainability, through its public companies Ihobe and EVE, ASTEKLIMA 2025 reinforces its vocation to raise social awareness with a programme that combines technical rigour with a participatory and informative approach.

A wide range of activities to turn knowledge into action

Over ten days, town councils, educational centres, universities, associations, companies and citizens will come together to enjoy a programme that includes workshops on energy consumption, talks, conferences, theatre, cinema, competitions, escape rooms, exhibitions, guided tours, visits, storytelling and outdoor activities.

With the theme “Every action counts, no matter how small”, ASTEKLIMA 2025 invites Basque citizens to take an active role in the fight against climate change. The activities are designed to promote co-responsibility in areas such as energy at home, sustainable mobility, responsible consumption, circular economy, biodiversity and environmental health.

This year’s edition is happening at a key moment, with new regulatory challenges and a citizens who are increasingly aware of the urgency to act. According to the results of the latest Climate and Energy Ecobarometer (citizen perception study on energy transition and climate change) carried out by the Basque Government’s Sociological Prospecting Office, in collaboration with the Basque Energy Agency-EVE and Ihobe, the Public Company for Environmental Management, 75% of the Basque population believe that the energy and climate transition will bring new opportunities for the Basque economy and 76% are concerned about climate change.

In this context, ASTEKLIMA has become an essential tool for activating social commitment and moving towards a climate-neutral and energy-sustainable Basque Country by 2050.

Klima Azoka, the travelling sustainability fair

One of the core events of ASTEKLIMA 2025 will be KLIMA AZOKA, a travelling fair that will tour several Basque municipalities with leisure activities. With a total of 7 tents, KLIMA Azoka addresses different environmental issues, such as the causes of climate change, energy, habits at home, mobility, leisure, consumption, soil protection and how to contribute to change from a personal perspective. The ultimate goal is for each individual to take on a challenge and commit to taking action.

During the Basque Country Climate and Energy Week, Klima Azoka will be in the following towns in the morning and afternoon: Hernani, Getxo, Irún, Zalla, Amurrio, Arrasate, Legazpi, Mungia, Ortuella and Sobrón.

Family fun at the Ekoetxea network

The Euskadi Ekoetxea network of environmental centres has also wanted to join the Basque Country Climate and Energy Week with a special programme of Climate Action Parties, which will be held in the five centres of the network. These days are designed for the whole family and combine fun, learning and civic engagement.

With a wide range of activities, such as guided tours of the natural environment, creative workshops, shows, games and sustainable markets, each Ekoetxea will offer a unique day to bring climate action closer to everyday life. The aim is for those attending to enjoy a different kind of day and discover new ways of caring for the planet and feeling part of a committed community.

All the festivals will include the following activities, amongst other things: a collective photo challenge to create a large mosaic of images, a participatory mural with messages and drawings for the climate, tastings of local seasonal products and a prize draw at the end to win an electric bicycle.

The Climate Action Parties will take place on two key dates: Sunday 19 October at the Ekoetxeas in Urdaibai, Txingudi and Meatzaldea; and Sunday 26 October at the Ekoetxeas in Azpeitia and Añana-Sobrón, during which 10,000 individual pledges are expected to be made.
