The action, developed in the Landa area within the framework of LIFE Urban Klima 2050, has consolidated a new carbon sink and improved the territory’s ecological connectivity.

Álava Provincial Council has carried out an ambitious ecological restoration project in the Zadorra river basin, specifically in the Landa area, within the framework of the LIFE Urban Klima 2050 European project. The intervention has led to the environmental recovery of an area of 4.08 hectares through reforestation with 7,912 specimens of native species.

The work included different phases, from preliminary clearing and preparation of the land by digging by backhoe, to the manual planting of species such as oak, ash and maple trees, adapted to the ecological conditions of the area. To guarantee the proper development of the new forest area, each specimen has been protected against rodents, thanks to acacia wood stakes, accompanied by jute blankets to control herbaceous competition.

The work has been completed with the installation of a barbed wire perimeter fence to protect the regenerated area and foster its consolidation in the medium and long term. This restoration contributes to the creation of a new carbon sink, improves soil stability and reinforces the ecological connectivity of the Zadorra basin.
