A technical delegation from the Government of the Canary Islands, led by the Deputy Minister of Ecological Transition and Fight against Climate Change, Julieta Schallenberg, visited the headquarters of Ihobe, the Basque Government's Public Company for Environmental Management, on Wednesday 28th May, to learn first-hand about the LIFE IP Urban Klima 2050 project, the largest climate action project in the Basque Country. The visit was part of a networking action that seeks to strengthen collaboration and share experiences between the Basque Country and the Canary Islands in terms of adaptation to climate change.
The visit was also attended by representatives of Gestión y Planeamiento Territorial y Medioambiental S.A. (Gesplan), the public company attached to the Regional Ministry of Ecological Transition, Fight against Climate Change and Territorial Planning of the Government of the Canary Islands.
The visit started off with a general presentation of the project in which its objectives, main lines of action and governance were discussed, as well as specific examples of actions implemented in municipalities like Zarautz, Bermeo, Bilbao or Bakio, among others. Illustrative videos of these interventions were also shown, which enabled the delegation to learn about the approaches developed in adapting the Basque coastline to climate change.
A technical session was then held in which the Ihobe team shared its experience in the development, management and coordination of the LIFE IP Urban Klima 2050 project.
In the afternoon, the delegation visited Bakio in Bizkaia, where the Mayoress of Bakio, Amets Jauregizar Baraiazarra, and municipal technical staff presented the pilot actions planned to improve the adaptation of the municipality to the risk of river and coastal flooding and to improve the environmental quality of the Estepona River.
